Elongation and Contraction of the Western Boundary Current Extension in a Shallow-Water Model: a Bifurcation Analysis
نویسندگان
چکیده
A numerical bifurcation analysis of a shallow water equation model of the doublegyre ocean circulation. The analysis is performed in a two parameter space where one parameter controls the viscosity of the model and a second parameter controls the symmetry of the wind forcing. The two parameter analysis is used to find “isolated” steady-state solution branches that were not and could not have been found in previous one-parameter continuation studies. The new branches come into existence at lower viscosity, have a jet extension that penetrates further eastward and are more stable than steady-state solution branches from previous studies. The intrinsic lowfrequency variability at lower viscosity is shown to be associated with a sequence of bifurcations originating from the new steady-state solution branch. A BOUNDARY-FITTED SHALLOW WATER MODEL OF SIMULATE TIDE AND SURGE FOR THE HEAD BAY OF BENGAL – APPLICATION TO CYCLONE SIDR (2007) AND AILA (2009)
Severe Tropical Cyclones associated with surges frequently hits the coastal region of Bangladesh. For a reliable hydrodynamic model to simulate the severity of such cyclones, it is necessary to incorporate the meteorological and hydrological inputs properly. In order to incorporate the coastlines and the island boundaries properly in the numerical scheme a very fine grid resolution along the co...
متن کاملBifurcation in a variational problem on a surface with a constraint
We describe a variational problem on a surface under a constraintof geometrical character. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence ofbifurcation points are provided. In local coordinates the problem corresponds toa quasilinear elliptic boundary value problem. The problem can be consideredas a physical model for several applications referring to continuum medium andmembranes.
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Free Surface in the Case of Plane Turbulent Wall Jets in Shallow Tailwater
Wall-jet flow is an important flow field in hydraulic engineering, and its applications include flow from the bottom outlet of dams and sluice gates. In this paper, the plane turbulent wall jet in shallow tailwater is simulated by solving the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the standard turbulence closure model. This study aims to explore the ability of a time splitting method ...
